You bomb craters look terrific, Pobs.
This terrain is coming along nicely.
I see the 'frontlines' are focussed into areas on the larger, high-altitude view. Didn't these connect up more?

Some more obsevations:
-----Could the zig-zags curve or be offset from one another? One long line doesn't quite look right. Edited: looking back, I see some nice changes. Connecting trenches and trails from the rear will make this possible. Further back are roads or trails for bringing in new cannon fodder.

-----Earth colors can vary with terrain. Some bomb and artillery craters can be 'new' with bright edges. 'Old' ones are duller brown and bigger from being trampled.
No tall, denuded tree poles?

-----How about a wider no-man's land between the opposing forces? Looks like no more than 100 meters now.

-----Some mild hills and valleys will add depth. And make a flyer's life more interesting.

-----Since the frontlines changed, the entire devastated or "scorched earth" can stretch far, far further on each side. No greenery for miles. Just tree stumps, broken buildings, artillery and truck trails, and heaped earth.
This will warn you of the approaching front.

-----I really like that broken villege at a smeared-up crossroads. Crossroads were always fought over. This will help widen your front lines, too.

All in all, you are doing a marvelous job.

Yes Pobs, maybe a combination of your first trench set
and the zig zag pattern, the zig zag pattern gets a bit
heady on it's own. I reckon the shell craters could be
darker still and maybe stand out a bit more m8.
Geat stuff.

oki .. sooo it is clear that the frontline was a lot more 'messy'... the main line tended to follow natural features or strategically important ones, and the connecting and support trenches were built wherever needed, leading to more of a network than a clear 'frontline trench'... and the type or form of the trench varied with locality, but crenellated seems popular, to avoid shrapnel flying along trenches killing and maiming as it went..

cheers,

Pobs

Glad to see you back, after a very long break. \:D

This WWI thing is still in it's infancy, but with time we will have a big collection of new models to play with, no we are not tied to just fiddling with the stock 3dz's. ;\)

Wow the terrain really is starting to take shape. Can we have hundreds of sprites go over the top and make a run for the enemy trenches?

Hi Guys.

I found these profiles in an article on the defense of England during WW1. They just go to show what desperate times they were.
