If you had NOT been trained in SH3 (or SH2, etc) ... and did not have your learned knowledge FROM SH3, would you still suggest Beach' start someone in SH4? Yes. The learning curve may be a tad steep for the totally uninitiated (I still flounder when using manual TDC), but that's why it has scalable difficulty. Start out on the novice settings and work your way up to "realistic". FWIW, my 12 year old daughter can play SH4 and loves to watch the targeted ships explode. The last thing she does is play it seriously, but she still enjoys an occasional foray into the Pacific. I figure if a 12 y/o girl can sit down and play this, anyone can.

no to diss 12yo girls, but I like it too. Beach, I have played this for a solid month or so. The manual is indeed crap, but if you play without the radar and use the sonar man rather than try to use it yourself, one can figure it out. There are a bunch of great mods at subsim which you should fill the rest of you disk with and let the other guy decide what he wants to use. Yes, I do believe that my SH3 experience helped with SH4 but that should not deter a dedicated interested subsimer of average intelligence from figuring this one out! Might also consider copying him the tips/tricks page of this forum. One other thing - if the guy reads German, this is a kick@ss handbook. It basically covers the whole game in the way the manual does not: http://forums-de.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9001092274/m/6061084955I haven't seen it in English, but luckily that doesn't bother me... Finally, if he is more of a flight sim guy, enemy engaged 2 did just come out - but no idea if its any less "buggy!" HTH

I'll let Pooch speak for himself, but I did notice that he, the formerly dedicated flight-sim enthusiast was sure Whooping and A-Hollerin' when we were playing online COOP last time! I think its a very enjoyable game, that just needs a few fixin's to make it solid. What the developers won't get to, almost assuredly the Modding Community will tackle. Excellent game.

The learning curve for the uninitiated is only steep when playing full-real. The realism is scalable enough so that a newcomer can let the automatic systems take care of the more difficult tasks while he concentrates on tactics and navigation. You can be enjoying SH4 while reading community-made guides or real-world literature to learn the more advanced aspects like manual targeting. And one thing that is easier in SH4 than in SH3 . . . crew management. Just let them handle their own shift change until you see a need to make changes in individual crew member placement.

I'm not a really experienced guy, but I will tell you that playing SH3 [other than having to be a Nazi] Sieg Heil or not. I'm glad I have it. Oh, please, can we drop that ignorant nonsense already? On the more pertinent topic at hand, SH4 still has some issues but it's still a pretty fun game to play at the moment. Yes, it takes time and practice to get good at it, like most naval sims, but the payoff when one gets good at playing it is extraordinary.

That may be 'ignorant nonsense' to YOU...Mate, but one who REMEMBERS WW2 doesn't quite see it that way, thank you... Not all Germans were Nazis and not all Nazis were Germans. It's kind of like saying: "I like playing SH4 (besides having to be a Democrat), but, Oh Say Can You See or not, I'm glad I have it." I'll leave it at that. I still think it's ignorance on your part.

What you say is correct, but ultimately the German Navy was fighting for victory in a war of aggression in a single party state with a genocidal, expansionist agenda. Regardless of what individuals did and didn't believe that was what the war machine was for - and for the record, both the navy and air force were regarded as more politically indoctrinated by the nazis than the army (by the nazis, that is) despite not being directly involved in war crimes for the most part.
That said playing SH4 isn't furthering the cause of freedom, and playing SH3 isn't going to get Germany some extra lebensraum in the east.
Have fun Finn
