On topic though, I have a 2.8GHz P4 (with 2G of RAM and an X800 graphics card) and have no problems running SH4. I find the fully manual mode in SH4 easier than the equivalent in SH3 - not entirely sure why to be honest. SH3 with mods (GWX essentially) is more developed at the moment than SH4, but I find them about the same fun-wise - especially as I can actually get torpedo hits using manual TDC in SH4 - so I don't see the harm in getting both.
Thanks for all the comments fellas...I'm not sure if the guy I was going to send it has the patience to patch and learn...but *I* do.. So maybe I'll get a replacement program and keep SH4 for myself.. Good solution for me I think!
