My P8000 pad started sending repeated button presses from A2 last week, then A3. Quickly thereafter both buttons became unresponsive and even more quickly after that, I lost most of the buttons on the pad. At present I think only one button is working.

PD-Profile and Dhauzimmer's drivers tell me I can successfully load a profile into it, so clearly I have a hardware failure somewhere.

Does anyone have any experience fixing such a failure? Any ideas where to look for the problem? Anything I could likely fix with a trusty soldering iron?

...anything?

Sounds like either the switch matrix is damaged or the connection to the PCB.

Not much to do there with a soldering iron as the switches are of the layered 'film' type.
The connection to the PCB is one of these films with conductive lines on it.

You could strip out the PCB and connect your own switches to it.

The P8000's PCB:
