NATO vs. SOVIETS

LOCATION: GREENLAND/ARCTIC ICE
DATE/TIME: 15 SEPTEMBER 1985, 16:00:00Z

To defend their ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) against NATO attack submarines (SSNs), the Soviets have employed a maritime strategy dubbed the Bastion concept. This means they keep most of their SSBNs within small areas protected by surface ships and airplanes. If the boomers ever leave the Bastions they remain under the Arctic ice where they are difficult to track.

ORDERS FOR CMDR NATO FORCES

INTEL:
The Soviets have sent two Typhoons and one Delta IV into attack positions under the Arctic ice cap. This presents an outstanding opportunity to severely damage the Soviet SSBN force and must not be missed. The boomers are probably escorted by several Victor-class attack submarines.

MISSION:
Sail north from Iceland and search for the Soviet submarines. Locate and sink at least two of the boomers. No more than two NATO submarines must be sunk in this operation. Scenario duration is ten (10) days.

Bloody Beira

The Royal Navy's Beira patrols were undertaken between 1966 and 1975 with the objective of preventing oil from reaching minority ruled Rhodesia via the port of Beira in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique. While of noble intent and supportive of a United Nations security council resolution it was a frustrating and costly endeavor for the Royal Navy to undertake given the impractical rules of engagment, difficult logistics and ever changing political climate of a new Africa. This is a scenario about just that.

This is a 1-2 player AAW, ASuW hypothetical scenario with a duration a little over three days. The UK side is suggested but the South African side is available for play was well. Please play with logistics on. Enjoy

Battle of Latakia

The 1973 Yom Kippur War that was fought between
Israel and her Arab neighbours was the first naval conflict in which missiles were used.

On this, the fist evening of the war the Israeli naval command decided to force a confrontation with the Syrian navy in the hope of securing a decisive victory and gaining control of the sea.

This histrorical encounter was the first naval encounter in which missiles were used. The Israeli navy consists of SAAR missile boats, armed with Gabriel I SSMs. They are up against Syrian Osa class missile boats, armed with the longer ranged and harder hitting SS-N-2 Styx missiles. As with most missile boat encounters, this one promises to be fast and deadly once the action begins.

First Strike

Following a failed attempted coup in Indonesia by anti-communist forces , the Communist Government put all blame onto the United Kingdom. Over the years communist forces had infiltrated into Malaysia and Borneo conducting terrorist attacks on the infrastructure of these countries . The UK and Australian and New Zealand forces had been hard pushed to stop these incursions, but had played no part in the failed coup. Indonesia has threatened to attack any British-flagged ships in its area, but at the present time hostilities haven’t broken out. The RMS Queen Mary on route from Hong Kong to Singapore is a prime target and has been given escort to Singapore!

Two Whiskey Class SSK's are believed to be in the area East of Singapore.
Indonesia has in its Air Inventory at least 20 Tu-16 Badger aircraft each capable of launching 2x AS-1 Kennel ASMs.

1. Escort RMS Queen Mary to Ref Pt RV, YOU HAVE 15 hours to do this.

2. Use HMS Barrossa as an Air Picket
to detect any incoming aircraft from Indonesia.

3. Use ASW assets to sanitize area East of Singapore.

Wolf and Rabbit

Since end of the 1990ies, the USN is using their SSBNs more conventionally, which sometimes raises the neck hairs of certain admirals. Part of a Fleet Examination Exercise very often is one SSBN against another in a so-called Wolf and Rabbit role.

As a surprise, however, occasionally the configuration is altered, and the skipper of the SSBN does not know that his opponent in reality is a SSN. But, to even the score, the SSBN skipper at times also may get some unannounced support from the surface.

The Saudi Revolution

Saudi fundamendalists (supported by Iranian subversives) managed to force the Saudi King into exile and gained the support of the Saudi forces. This development was again supported by an aggressive stand from Iraq (after the embargo was lifted two years ago).

Suddenly, it became apparent that these three nations intend to pursue joint plans to eradicate the Israeli nation from the map.

U.S. and Britsh forces in the region form task groups to stop such a move and their first priority is to destroy or to disable all the equipment delivered by the West (and the East in the case of re-armed Iraq and Iran) on the ground and in the air.

THIS SCENARIO SHOULD BE PLAYED WITH THE NUCLEAR OPTION ENABLED.

Orders for Commander U.S. operations:

GENERAL
The fundamentalist revolution in Saudi Arabia has gained - unexpectedly - the full support of the Saudi military and National Guard. It is confirmed that Iranian and Iraqi activists are in the kingdom and spearheading the moves of the new Revolutionary Council.

INTELLIGENCE
Operation RE-TAKE - the destruction of US- and UK-supplied facilities, aircraft, and naval assets - has been compromised. The latest satellite pass confirms that Saudi forces are on full alert and that the Saudi fleet has left their home ports of Jeddah and Dammam.

DIA believes that both Iran and Iraq might intervene in the forthcoming conflict once our combined U.S./U.K. attack on Saudi Arabia is launched.

A small Iranian SAG left Bushehr three hours ago. All other Iranian naval assets are - except their three Kilos - in port. The Kilos left Chah Bahr six days ago and are believed to be operating within the Arabian Gulf.

Two days ago, Iran returned two bomber squadrons to Iraq; including Fencers, Badgers, and Blinders.

Only the Iraqi bases in Baghdad and Umm Qasr are operational. Iran operates fighter squadrons from Chah Bahr, Bandar Abbas, and Tehran.

Furthermore, we have reliable information from sources loyal to the USA that an attack on our facilities on Bahrain is imminent.

ORDERS
Your first priority is the protection of the SAG in Bahraini waters and our facilities at Sheikh Isa AB. The same priority level has been given to the protection of the British PHIBRON heading for the Strait of Hormuz as the anti-air capability of our British allies is limited at best.

British forces will launch independent strikes at enemy facilities and it might be prudent to provide additional protection for their strike aircraft.

Once air superiority has been established, destroy the Saudi C3I facilities and disable the Saudi Air Force. It is crucial that the Saudi AWACS planes are eliminated. Destroy as many Saudi fighters and fighter-bombers as possible.

In the event of Iranian or Iraqi intervention, launch strikes on Tehran and Baghdad and destroy the command facilities. At the same time, if feasible, destroy the Iranian and Iraqi ministries of defence to teach the radicals a lesson that the USA can hit them anywhere. Bear in mind, however, that Baghdad must be considered well protected and that any air strike should be well planned and executed in conjunction with cruise missile attacks.

The Saudi base at Khamis Mushayt is another high priority target.

In case of Iranian intervention, land the SEALS near Chah Bahr and destroy the naval facilities at this base.

Ensure that the opposition forces do not attack commercial shipping.

Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian, Israeli, Emirati, Ethiopian, Yemeni, Sudanese, and Qatari air space is neutral.

EXECUTION
At your discretion. However, it is essential that all fighters based in Sheikh Isa AB be launched immediately for the protection of the facilities and the nearby SAG. These fighters should be re-inforced immediately by detachments from the CVBG operating in the Arabian Sea and our temporary base in Masirah.

FURTHERMORE, NOTE THAT ALL AMERICAN PLANES WHICH LAND REFUELING IN CAIRO CAN ONLY BE REPLENISHED IN INCIRLIK.

Once you are out of the Red Sea, combine the Stragglers, Main Force and Advance Group into a professional Task Force.
