Q - Can I play with my GamerTag on two Xbox's at once? A - No, just one at a time.
Q - Can I move my gamertag to a friends Xbox or a 2nd Xbox in my house? A - Yes, using a Memory card or by Downloading the GamerTag via Xbox Live to the 2nd/Friends console.
Q - If my Hard Drive dies, do I loose my GamerTag? A - No, you can download it again via Xbox Live.
Q - If my Hard Drive dies, do i loose all my save games? A - Yes. Buy a memory card and back them up!

IIRC, one of my buddies had their HD crash. When he got a new HD, Xbox Live already had his saves so all he had to do was download them. Same with purchases, Xbox Live records what you have bought.

I don't think it keeps the saves. If that's true it's news to me and would be a good thing!
However I don't believe your 360 uploads save games to the Live service. Achievements, and M$ points, profile information, yes, saves no.
Now if they repaired the whole 360, he may have had the original HD back.

I'll ask him because he was impressed how much MS kept and that he didn't have to go back in the games.

I think MS keeps data on your game progress, aka achievments, but I don't think it keeps the actual save files.

An easy way to tell. go into the System blade, then Memory. Then find a game save and delete it. Start your game and see if it remembers where you were upto in Single player... I'll tell you now that it wont. It will, as has been stated, remember all your achievements and any online progress, via XBL.

Some Games also Lock the Saves so they Cannot Be copied (Forza Motorsport Does this on Both Xbox1 and when using it in BWC Mode on the 360), however, im told there is a nifty lil Xbox 360 HDD Docking station taht you can just slip your HDD on and interface it with your PC and copy the entire contents (other than system files)

That sounds neat. I would like an alternative to their 64MB card files, they aren't big enough to hold all the save game data for all the games I have. So then the triage starts and you prune out your game data when backing up.

Will you ever have to replace your Xbox?
Most likely yes, several times.
