I flew EAW multiplayer last night for the first time. Great fun. My fellow pilots helped me through a messy start! Here's what I learned to get a
basic online multiplayer setup:
-Start with a clean install of EAW
-patch using 'eawv1-2.exe' this patch is on late game CD. If you have an older CD, get the patch from:
http://www.sandbaggereaw.com/EAWKeyFiles.html (7th download down the list "
This file provides the EAW Version 1.2 (English) EXE files. Submitted by John 'Col. Gibbon' Graham. (File size 5.7 MEG)."
-make a backup copy of the EAW folder when you have patched it to V2.[/b]
-install whatever game upgrades you need to fly with your chosen multiplayer group. Eg.
http://groups.msn.com/THEEAWLAUNCHPAD (Its also worth installing 'Teamspeak':
http://www.goteamspeak.com/ to rig a mike & headphones up and chat).
To join a new TCP/IP game,
-copy the IP number,
-launch EAW,
-click on 'Multiplayer' in the main menu,
-Select TCP/IP connection option,
(fight with your firewall! -tell it to permit EAW to connect the internet, click any radio button/checkbox that says e.g 'always use this action'! EAW doesn't run in windowed mode, so you may have to quit the game to see the dialogue box! -just the first time you do the firewall setting!)
.....re-launch EAW.... -multiplayer... -TCP/IP......
-up comes a little dialogue box. Paste or type the IP number in, and click 'OK'
-wait for the game to appear in the right-hand window (unless you host it). your mouse may freeze up while this happens, just wait........
-when the game is listed & mouse unfrozen, click 'join'
-now in the 'ready room', you can change 'plane, loadout etc. and textchat. Or use Teamspeak if the others are using it too.
-when everyone is ready, the host will launch the game!
....if (when) you're shot down, you'll re-spawn mid-air for some more! andmoreagain!
.....at 5am shutdown the now-smoking computer, and collapse asleep....Next morning, get shouted at by spouse/partner/children/parents/cat/dog ...or all of these....Fall asleep at workzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....(repeat until exhausted/insanity/divorce/sacking...or all of these)
Note: Windows 2000 compatability:
EAW won't recognise USB joystick. Use Microsoft Application Compatability Toolkit 'act30pkg.exe' -You'll have to use a search engine to find it-. When you've got it, set up a 'custom database' settings with 'emulate windows joystick' unchecked to fix this issue. You must then click 'install database' and that should do the trick.
