Could I please get some advice from you folks on gaming headsets? I am strongly considering a Sennheiser PC165. Any thoughts or considerations about this or another unit perhaps? i.e USB or not? wireless or not?, etc. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a “Sharkoon MAJESTIC 5.1 USB HEADSET”
I’m very satisfied with it.
It’s big, but shuts out almost all external sound, so I like it better than my previous sound playback solution.
Actually I stopped using my other soundcard (Adigy2-ZS) for gaming.

I don’t know the price, because it was given to me as a present.

I use a $30 plantronics that covers your ear that I think is fine. Is line-in plug and its not fancy but its OK.

Tell us more about what your effect your trying to get. Are you looking for high end.

I also believe there might be a post further down about ear buds and ear covers.

I read a rewiev recently but forgott the brand but it was about a headset that automatically, when you put it on shut down the external speakers. Cost abt 50$

I bought these not long ago from E-Dimensional

They're kind of neat.

I have a (very) cheap 10$ headset I don't even know the manufacturer. It sounds ok and covers my ears. \:D

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

The Norwegian: Your suggestion for the Sharkoon looks interesting but appears to be available only in UK or Europe? Will continue to look for source in US.

WCK0240: These look very nice and they are about half the price of the Sennheiser units.

Anyway, thanks to all for your help.

I use a Plantronics DSP-500. Best mic and headphone quality I've used, hands down.

Plantronics DSP-500...concurr.

Now if want a good one with positional sound, look at Turtle Beach.

A cheap USB headset is the way to go, that way you can hear other people without it getting in game sounds as well.(use external speakers for ingame sounds)

I had some trouble with USB based sound, I'm using a Plantronics DSP-500 too. Use onboard sound for Teamspeak and Shoot, Sim sounds come through Logitech 5.1.
Only way to go IMO.

I use the Koss SB/45 headset. Cover your ears, is really comfortable and has incredibly good microphone. On top of that the mic is very sturdily made and the headset can be folded into the smallest package I've seen contrary to its unfolded size.

Drawback is that it has a tad weak bass. Uses normal audio plugs, and myself use it on a separate sound card (I have my built in one, and my old SoundBlaster! one) so that I can have the sound from F4AF in my normal speakers.

google turtle beach - you will get their web site.

they used to be somewhat of a competitor for Ceative...but are not as popular. i have never had a Turtle Beach card, but some folks swear by them...they also used to be more music focused I think. regardless, they are an alternative to Creative and have several products.

for the headset, you might look at the Razer Barracuda HP-1 or the Medusa 5.1 surround sound headsets.

I'm looking and most are from Logitech . I just bought a regular set from Logitech (not USB) and WOW, are they uncomfortable.

Anyone know of a comfortable brand, preferably USB?

These things I had, they LOOKED padded, but it was really just vinyl over plastic. They were too small for my ears, too (and I don't have satellite dishes for ears). On top of that, they applied so much pressure, my ears were numb and I had a mild headache after 10 minutes.

Edit: Here they are - Golly, ouch! \:\(

BTW advise staying away from usb as it just puts more load on your CPU...not good if you're a serious gamer.

Great info, guys! I like the idea of seperating the comms from the rest of the sim, like Gatorman does, but his system looks like it can handle the extra load Hammer mentions. I've got a modest 3GHz machine, so I might forget USB. I'd hate to have stutter everytime someone says something.
