To get a medal, I normally start a Korea campaign, usually Rolling Fire. Load up some CBU's or GBU B/Bs and take out as many HART sites as possible along the border. There is normally loads of equipment there to take out. If you get there quick you can come back with 50+ kills. If you have fuel left look for some A/C to take out as well. This will get you a medal. It has me every time...

It would be interesting to see what the criteria are for the various medals in the sim. It does seem that the criteria has become more stringent in AF, as compared to its predecessors.

In my case, I've only been awarded two medals (multiple times)...not including the basic campaign medal...the Air Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Like mentioned above, getting significant number of ground kills by hammering HART units early in campaign will almost always get you an Air Medal.

My most recent Air Medal (last night) was result of an interdiction mission with only 16 ground kills and 1 air kill. Extract from mission debrief:

RECORD BEGIN TIMESTAMP 10/23/2006 22:47:08.
Game is Campaign type Local

Mission Type: Interdiction
Flight Unique Id: 172172040
3 Ship Flight
Ac type: F-16C-40 CCIP
Country: U.S.

Event Klink landed at 17:45:12
Event Python12 landed at 17:47:05
Event Klink exited from Python11 at 17:51:37

In any event, what seems to be requirement is:

- avoiding/neutralizing significant threats (avoiding R-27R and SA-14 launches and dispatching MIG-29s that jumped flight)
- 100% weapon hits (no misses...note I also RTB'd with 3 slammers still on the rails)
- returning safely to base with no damage (note Python13 successfully ditched (belly landing) after sustaining ground fire damage...pilot OK/plane damaged)

Can anybody from LP provide info on what it takes to earn each of the following:

- Air Medal
- Distinguished Flying Cross
- Silver Star
- Air Force Cross

...as well as the Longevity Medal?

Thanks.

Klink sends.

Play at high realism and challenge ratings. Be accurate with your weapons. Destroy both air and ground targets. Evade missiles. Take off and land with no violations. Complete mission objective. Ensure wingmen survive.

Or, make me an offer (will trade for Air Force Cross) \:\)

I normally grab a BARCAP and move the waypoints over to the HART sites and set the CAP time down to a couple of mins. Then after time is up I go bomb the HARTS. Also take note of the other posts here, settings etc... One other thing is that I usually send the wingman home after T/O as he normally does something stupid and dies.....That'll cost you the medal!!!

Praetor has a post on what is required on MVS forums :

http://www.multiviperforums.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1506&highlight=medal

I'll ad to that, that I've gotten Air Medals with as "low" as 12 AG kills and 1 AA kill - I was surprised as well \:\)

Thanks VIP,

That was along lines of what I was looking for. I note that Praetor also only sporting Air Medals and DFC's.

Congrats DBond on your stellar flying record...and your AF Silver Stars. Only my SP4.2 logbook has ever seen any of those, along with one Air Force Cross. My next AF campaign I'll fly on ACE settings and see what happens then (currently flying on Veteran...with sliders in DPRK advantage...and realism at 99%).

Klink sends.

I've gotten DFC's and Air Medals with ground kills only and not returning to base. Not getting shot down, just exiting before landing. I also actually got a DFC one for taking out a bunch of houses (along with the Engineer battalion I was going after.) Normally Engineer battalions (12 vehicles) don't get me any medals, but with those 10 or 15 huts that got taken out along with them, medals galore!

Other good ways to get medals are AAA battalions, HQ battalions, and any other ground unit you can find that has a lot of vehicles lined up in a column. It doesn't get much easier than that. OR those that are situated into clusters, like the aforementioned HART sites. I usually find myself too busy with OCA and SEAD in the beginning of a campaign that I don't get the opportunity to hit them, but there's still plenty of targets out there, including lots of huts if you want to be cheap.

I should clarify my earlier statement. All of those things are factored, along with some other things. It's not necessary to land (none of the factors are necessary really), but it all contrbutes towards the points awarded that factor into the medal calculation. Perhaps a DFC would have been a Silver Star if the mission had been landed for example. Same with air targets -- as mentioned medals can be awarded with ground targets only, but air targets increase the probability of getting a medal.
