Hi,

I had loaded up 4 AIM-120-C5s and 2 AIM-9X missiles (the 9X missiles were located on the wing tips) and without using the RADAR, uncaged the seeker head and tried to get a tone on an enemy MiG-29SM. No matter what I did they wouldn't track, and the diamond was nowhere to be seen. I nearly had a few mid-airs with two F-15s that were also trying to shoot this guy down, and the IR missile didn't even respond to them. \:\(

The MiG-29 pulled the cobra manouver on me and shot me down, but I had 4 or 5 opportunities to shoot first had the missiles been working!!!

I did fire them anyways to see what they would do, and they just flew in a straight line and didn't track.

Is this fixed in 1.0.6? If not, is there any chance of a fix for this in 1.0.6????

Thanks guys! \:\)

EDIT: I was in MP at the time. BARCAP.

Hi

It doesn't work that way in F4. You can't just uncage seeker without a tone/growl. The seeker is just going around an around its max gimbal trying to search for IR sig but never finds its.
what you can do without radar on is place target over diamond in hud, when you hear slight growl uncage now and seeker(diamond) will stay tracking the target till launch or gimbal breaks ,which is like 80-90deg for aim9x.

I haven't seen a Mig to a cobra yet. That would be cool.

Shift+4 to padlock the enemy. Then uncage.

m8 you must have a bit of growl when you uncage the little missile

Hi,

I tried that, too. I re-caged the seeker head and the diamond re-appeared, got the bandit on the nose (I couldn't hear any distinct change in the tone), uncaged, and it didn't track. I was about 2nm from the bandit; surely it should have been screaming?? Considering they have a 9nm range, I was a bit surprised when they wouldn't track.

I was as close at one point as I was to these F-15s who were also trying to shoot him down (the MiG is the guy flying bottom to top in the pic):

They don't have a 9 nm range via their seeker head; that's via radar lock.

However, your problem is strange; definately should (does for me) have worked via seeker head in your scenario.

Were you in dogfight mode at the time ?

Ahh - OK!

No; I was in AA mode, CWR/RWS RADAR mode but with SILENT selected at that time, with the 9X as the selected weapon. I used BORE mode as the RADAR was off.

I did **NOT** select select "COOL" however; this was already selected. Maybe this is the issue here?? Is "COOL" selected by default?

I'm checking this now.

Hi,

I think I was outside aquisition parameters. I can target (without the RADAR) the aircraft in the training mission.

I also tried switching from COOL to WARM, but it went back to COOL automatically.

Its rare but it happened to me too and I was stunned! I didn't expect it and overshot. Mind you, this subject became a heated debate... ;\)

Yeah, don't worry about the cool/warm stuff for now. For that matter, I've never used it \:\)

Anyway, for a quick/easy way, switch to dogfight mode ("d" key) before uncaging, and you'll be blasting them right and left \:\)

Mess around with the sub-modes in dogfight mode too (F8 key).

you can switch from BP ( defaulted - ByPass ) to TD ( Threshold Detect ) and the IR will automatically uncage if something gets near the seeker head...

Hag

PS The IR missiles work properly.. i'm betting you are just missing something sinister
