I've had Falcon4 since the day it was released. I have the binder edition. I'd say I got my money's worth out of it. I played it all the way up through 1.08 and the iBeta realism patches, then quit some time after that.
I tried to get back into it when SP3 was released, then SP4, and then again with FF3's one click installer. All three times, after a day or two I would just quit playing. I just couldn't get back into it for some reason.
Last night I spotted F4:AF on the shelf at my local Wal-Mart and brought it home. I haven't opened it yet, because I'm starting to have second thoughts. I wonder if I'll be able to get into it seriously this time.
I'd really like to get back in to F4 and I'm hoping that AF will do it. Before I open the box though, my first question is will it work on my system (specs in sig). I've had a few problems with some older games and even new games, all related to the nvidia drivers.
The box feels like it has a printed manual in it. How in depth is it? I still have my original bound F4 manual, will it still be of any use? I'll have to go back through the training missions, but I remember that was one of the fun parts of the original. I liked to be able to fly the training mission and have the hard copy on my lap.

The box has a 109-page printed manual, but the real manual is a PDF which becomes available when you install the sim. This manual is 716 pages.

If you quit playing Falcon4 due to playing it to death, then you probably won't get into this one either. Its the same game basically. Except they took special care to eliminate crashes and made it work. They did improve some of the graphics but its hard to notice while you are playing. (Like the new flash/smoke trails on the missles are cool but they go by so quick that you don't have time to admire them) If you quit playing before because of the crashes and instability, you will probably be happy with the product. I really do think this "crashing" issue was pretty much taken care of in last releases of the mods to the "Original" F4. If you're refering to the 1.08 and the very early SPx and FFx, I can see your point. Other than that.

Although, if there is someone out there that said "Yeah, I was done with F4 after 1.08 because I put in just way too many hours.." I want to shake his/her hand. Now THAT is dedication.

I don't really remember why I quit. I know I did get frustrated after they dropped support after 1.08 trying to keep up with all of the unofficial patches and things. I know I never finished a campaign because each time there was an update I had to start over. I know my computer is more than the requirements, the reason I asked if it would run was because I've had a few games and programs that don't work, all of which are due to the nvidia drivers + dual core issues. I did not know that F4:AF was optimized for dual core CPU's. How much has changed in terms of controls from the original F4 and AF? I'm going to keep it and give it a shot, but now I have to wait a week to install it because I have to go out of town.

Re: vid dlls,
I've found that the better sims are usually older games and sometimes you just have to try a few different dll versions to find ones that work best with your particular games.

You will find that Training Mission 17: AIM-7 Sparrow is missing from AF. Otherwise they are still basically the same game. Oh, and you now have two different theatres (Korea and the Balkans) in three different time peiods( 1999, 2005 and 2010).
I still use my hard-bound Falcon 4.0 Manual all the time to fly AF.
