My system isn't radically different from yours...and I've never seen anything but "smooth as silk" on landing. XP64 3200+ - a bit faster, but the "64" is useless for now. I'm using an nvidia 6600GT card...comparable to the 9800 line overall... Ohhhhh...you using heavy FSAA/AF? I'm not.

THX for your reply Teej! I'm envious of your "smooth" FPS. You're not getting any significant hits around airbases & landing on final? Wow! Most of the guys I fly with & host get the FPS hit as I (9-12).
My VC anti-aliasing & anasotropic filtering is set for "Let the application decide." Otherwise lowest setting is 2x. Will try 2x & see if it helps. But my little processor is running at 2.19 GHz. So it's not for lack of power, at least it would seem anyway.
Best regards,

Ohhhhh...you using heavy FSAA/AF? I'm not. Teej the 6600 Nvidia cards were released in the same generation as the ATI x800 range of cards. The 9800 range from ATI (of which i have the XT) were the top of the range when the Nvidia FX cards were the latest from them. i cant imagine that there is a great deal of comparison between the 6600gt and the 9800pro.

Not bad for a card that I paid a good bit under $200 for.

Well, whatever the comparison, I wish some kind of modification in the code or whatever would address this FPS issue, because as you can imagine it's a bit frustrating as well as challenging to negotiate a 'slide show' landing.
BTW tried FSAA (anti-aliasing) at 2x as opposed to "Let application decide," & no FPS difference on short final approach in campaign online or off. Interestingly, the training hop for landing final approach yeilded no FPS hits. I suppose that's due to no a/c moving about on the base, but don't know.

i cant imagine that there is a great deal of comparison between the 6600gt and the 9800pro. Well, there is. The 6600GT is a this-generation mid-end card. The 9800 Pro is a last-generation high-level card. They are the two most equal cards you will find when bridging a technology generation.

Ohhhhh...you using heavy FSAA/AF? I'm not. I have totally the same issue. Athlon XP 2600+, Radeon 9800Pro, 1 Gig'o'RAM FSAA/AF set to application controlled (can't turn it off completely in the driver menu) Everything is running smooth when in the air (40-70 FPS) but as soon I get to takeoff/landing it gives me 9-11 FPS (measured with FRAPS) which is kinda tricky to land. Though it's much better in the Balkan Campaign as Amendola seems not to house as many planes compared to Seoul or Choongwon. Also "disable shadows" seems not to work at all for me as shadows are still present for every plane.

You can head here to find some IP's of multiplayer servers. http://f4servers.game-host.org/afserverlist/ If you have a router you'll want to forward ports 2934 and 2935 to be able to play online. Once you do that you'll be able to join up.

Anyone? I recommend trying Sherlock's server off the Falcon4 server list (link in post above). This server seems to be the most reliable for multiplayer connection...ymmv. If you are running a router then you should do a search for related threads on setting up multiplayer through a router. I do not run a router and I can connect to Sherlock's server only if I turn down my firewall setting to basic/minimum. I can also connect when my firewall is off, but I don't feel confident to do that for hours and hours. There are lots of veterans here so i'm sure if you provide more details (firewall software? router brand? etc. etc.) someone can come along and help you. good luck, pilot!
