Folks,

Guten morgen. The temp is 76°F. with 64% humidity. There is a 9 mph wind from the SW and a reported visibility of 10 m.

We seem to have misplaced Fittop somehow. Before we organize the customary search party at the old P&P we will have to give the pub 24 hour advanced warning so they can stock up on their beverages. Dux has gone missing but that was to be expected since those three stars were aligned. One, the good fishing season in Wales, two, a new lady friend, three, the game server game back online. Should he turn up he can help search for Fittop. Even in the halcyon days summer was quieter in HWH Hall.

Folks,

OG:

I hardly think that had anything to do with it. You are a welcome contributor. The beautiful summer weather with so many opportunities for outdoor pleasures is far more likely to be the reason. The Siren Song of summers past and present calls to us all. It is a strong man indeed who can resist it. They'll return. They always have. "Those lazy, hazy days of Summer...of soda, and pretzels and beer"... I can hear Nat King Cole singing that now and that calls to memory another summer day much like today but so long ago. What a pleasant memory that is.

Gents,

OG; I cannot say it finer than Roger puts it, you are a valued and welcome addition to our club and summer has always been a slow time with people going away for holidays or generally enjoy the many hours of light, at least that is the conditions more or less in the Northern part of Europe and especially in Scandinavia where the bright nights currently ensure that it never gets darker than twilight. It is a known occurrence that some people, perhaps visitors who are not entirely aware of the conditions stay out too late because they wait for it to become "late" i.e. dark.

Windy conditions these last two days and quite cold but things are about to change a bit for the better with steadily but slowly rising temps from tomorrow and throughout the weekend. We're not coming anywhere close to you Roger, with only 23 C, any humidity in the air will be only a minor nuisance and not the big drain ion energy that higher temperatures and coinciding humid conditions effects.

This weekend marks the running of another of Motorsport's Great Races; the Vingt-quatre Heures du Mans, or the 24 Hours of Le Mans. 55 Cars will race for 24 hours, competing in 4 different classes. I'll be camping in front of the TV screen for as much of the 24 hours I can handle, usually I crash into bed at 2 or 3 o'clock and get up again to watch from 9 or 10 and till the chequered flag falls Sunday at 15.00 Hrs. Ford won their class, the GT class last year and Corvette, Ferrari and Aston will want their sweet re3venge as they felt that Ford sandbagged during the performance measurements run by the Automobil Club de l´Ouest thus causing the organizers to restrict the capabilities of Fords competitors. Hoping for a great, safe race with Danes on the top step podium in their respective classes.

Folks,

This promises to be the hottest day so far this year. At 1:45 PM the temp is 89°F. and rising. The humidity is but 51% and that makes the heat tolerable.A 10 mph wind out of the NW helps a bit too. The visibility is reported to be 10m. The kids are already getting browner. Odd, they'll sit around in the house playing xbox on cooler day but rush right out to their bikes on days like this. The industrial strength sunscreen is bought in the giant economy size around here.

MG:

The race should be as exciting as ever. I am reminded of the documovie made with Steve McQueen about the race. "Le Mans" is a 1971 film depicting a fictional 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race. That was not as successful as Jim Garner's '66 "Grand Prix". We do hope for an exciting but safe running of this great endurance race for man and machine.

Good morning.

Missed you guys, and No, Sir, OG. I very much enjoyed your solution to the lack of rain, and was even accused of a similar dance by the lady of this house.

My howls might have been misinterpreted as she swears that the zoo may have lost one of its primates and she claims she suspects it's taken refuge in this house.
But she's mistaken. The only pressing problem was the distance to the urinal versus my age. Glad to say I made it.

Of course, I could not do a rain dance with company in the house; definitely not with two minors visiting, and I was not about to start jumping around, even outside.
The lady's daughter might think I was making fun of her gestures after a fire ant found her foot intruding into its ant hill's side.

It appears that that was the second time said young 30+ year-old has gotten familiar with fire ants.

The first time was during her Army's basic training.
The story is best heard with a cold beer, but apparently it is where and when she said she learned "discipline".
I do sympathize as I remember an insect hydrating itself on my sweat during a parade and there was nothing I could do about the pest while some colonel rambled on and on.
I remain thankful my experience was not at the rifle range like hers.

At least in those days fire ants were something you read about and only existed somewhere else.

I think Summer has unofficially arrived in these plains, with expectations of 100F being the temperature readings by the weekend.

Folks,

We had heavy rain last night. The sun has dried us out and burned the clouds away. The temp at 10:30 AM is 76°F. with no measurable wind coming from anywhere. We enjoy a dreadful humidity of 85% due to evaporation I guess. The visibility reported is 10m.Yesterday before the rain was the hottest we have had this year. There are plenty of hot days to come before October cools us down. Typical summer weather for us.

I imagine Jens is biking somewhere in the kingdom of Denmark. Dux is fishing for whales in Wales and Fittop is doing something several states south of me. OG could be hunting gators from his plane and I am about to put on my chef's hat to make pancakes for the 3 kids who are now out of school. I hope no one gets sick..... this time. wink

Folks,

I neglected to mention that I watched again the1970s film "Waterloo". I saw it when released and then owned a VHS copy for years. I have always liked that film though it was a box office failure in the US. It won several BAFTA awards and was very popular in the UK. You will probably never see such a spectacle filmed this way again. Much of the Russian army was used to film the British soldiers. There are quite a few errors I noted in the film but by and large, it is true to history. Christopher Plummer plays Wellington and Rod Steiger Napoleon. Peter Sellers was once considered for Napoleon and Richard Burton as well. Peter O'Toole was considered for Wellington. I watched most of the film during a heavy thunderstorm. Those pyrotechnics only reinforced the sounds of battle coming from my headset. Jack Hawkins plays the doomed Picton in the film. Jack had been suffering from throat cancer and had his larynx removed. Jack had always had a very distinctive and delightful voice. Pity, all his dialog had to be dubbed. Orsen Wells gets third billing in the film but is barely seen as the king.

I recommend the film. It can be found in full on YouTube.

Gents,

We are expecting 80f by weekend with a steady rise.

I remember Jack Hawkins being interviewed when his voice has practically disappeared. He said that he was hoping for some enterprising person to re-introduce silent films. cool

Good day Gents,

Nice day here. 85 F but a bit humid. Looks like the rain clouds are building up and hopefully we'll get some rain today since I just put fertilizer on the lawn. Also did some iron supplement for the soil. Now a bit of rain would settle it in just right. Also the lakes and ponds could still stand some more filling.

If Jens is out on a bike trip I hope he shares some photos.

Going to do steamed shrimp for dinner tonight.

Gents,

I did manage to get some bicycling in yesterday and today as conditions were dry, some wind yesterday but less today. The forecast for tonight is heavy showers and possible thunderstorms but I don't think it will get to that here because temperatures have only been around 22 degrees C today, slightly warmer than yesterday. tomorrow looks like it is a rest up day as the wind will be prevailing during the day and remnants of tonight's shower is expected to last into tomorrow.

Saturday I might get another ride in, before the big race in Le Mans. Calories from the company excursion to the state prison I told you about did abound during coffee treats and three course dinner later that day, and there's a plan for a bowl of treats during race Saturday.

Last summer I read Jack Hawkins' autobiography; "Anything for a Quiet Life", remembering some of the movies he was in - in fact he had a role in the "first" Battle of Britain movie, the one called "Angels 15" if I remember correctly. He was a Squadron Leader or Staion Commander or both in the movie. Of course he was also unforgettable as the captain of the ship in "The Cruel Sea". Some brilliant movies right there. I should check out Waterloo however that period doesn't quite grab me although I was stunned when I first watched Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. Every frame of that movie is a masterpiece of photography.

Speaking of photography, I might reuse some of my older shots when I had to get off the bike to catch my breath. These days I'm far too fit to stop and admire the scenery! Perhaps a GoPro is in my future?

Back to Qualifying in France now courtesy of the FIAWEC app and YouTube even!

Folks,

Dux:

So glad nobody's husband has shot you old man. Wales is warming up, is it? LOL. A versatile actor was old Jack, apparently with a good sense of humor. He joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1940, was commissioned and served with the second British Division in India. I believe he was a colonel. He was married to Jessica Tandy famous for many roles herself including "Driving Miss Daisy". He was a heavy smoker. Well known actor especially for 3 appearing in three Best Picture Academy Award winners, "The Bridge on the River Kwai", "Ben-Hur", and Lawrence of Arabia". He claimed in his autobiography that he was not typecast as he had played less military roles than John Mills or Trevor Howard and even Richard Attenborough. He was in fact awarded the CBE in the 50s. I believe he had an artificial voice box surgically implanted shortly before his death.

OG:

Shrimp sounds great. We'll have spaghetti.

Folks,

Jens,

You will probably have the shortest summer of all of us but it will get warmer. Good luck going "Pro".

I have never seen that first BoB movie. I was not even aware of it. I've seen the last BoB film many times, perhaps that makes up for it? I'll try to find it. You are quite right about "Barry Lyndon" being the enjoyable film you say it is. It starred Ryan O'Neal, Leonard Rossiter, and Hardy Kruger. I cannot remember the leading lady's name. An Irish rogue wins the heart of a rich widow. I saw that one in the theater and then again somewhat recently. June 18, 1815. "Waterloo" is not for everyone. There are a few slow stretches especially at the beginning but when the battles begin it is a real early 19th-century military spectacle not likely to be seen on film again without CGI. It wold be hugely expensive and since the movie was a flop here not a good investment idea. There was another "Napoleon" biofilm in the works at MGM about the same time. That was dropped and never made. I enjoyed it.

Folks,

A very quick search brought up the following titles:

The First of the Few 1942
The Battle of Britain 1943 B&W
Angels one five 1952
Reach for the Sky 1956*
Battle of Britain 1969*
Pearl Harbor 2001*
Dark Blue World 2001

I have only seen 3 of them.

Dark Blue World was very good despite it not getting much public exposure.

Chaps,

JRT,

It could indeed end with me being shot. Trying to arrange a dinner date for 26th back up in Derbyshire but I want to have her husband's permission for a pre- birthday dinner. Without him of course. An unusual ploy I must admit but I stress that I will only be her escort. You do believe me don't you chaps?

I have ordered a Savile Row shirt especially for that evening, a natty, fitted pink number with matching pink and navy diagonal striped tie. Dark navy suit and some patent leather shoes from the Lifeboat charity shop.
If the worst comes to the worst, I intend to look good lying in the Chapel of Rest.

Folks,

More rain last night and again this morning. The sun is out doing his radiant best. The temp at 9:30 AM is 74°F. and the humidity is a wet 94%. Take a deep breath and you risk drowning. Visibility is reported to be 7 m and there is no measurable wind blowing from any direction.

Dux:

Proceed with all caution. Especially so unless the lady in question has given you the high sign. Your reputation with the ladies might well indicate the likelihood that you might expire at a ripe old age due to lead poisoning from an irate husband's bullets. Taking into consideration your well-known bravery in the face of husbandry peril, I'd guess if the man is a good shot there will be a tight pattern on your backside. This might not necessarily be fatal of course but certainly a damned nuisance. Just to be on the safe side, I'd take to wearing those undies you had the steel plate glued to when the flack got so bad over France. It might slow you down a bit to be sure but chances are you'll appreciate being able to sit down the next day. wink

Savile Row tailors are used to getting unusual requests from clients I suppose. Perhaps they might have an old pair of chain mail underpants and shirt hanging around you might wear the one night on approval. In that case, I'd expect if you showed back up the next day anywhere rather than at the Zippo brand Crematory of the Ashes to Ashes funeral chapel you'd likely approve. Dressed to the nines in those expensive duds someone on their staff who happens to be your size will benefit no doubt. Do take care. smile

Dux; You are a brave man indeed. Nuff said!

Gents,

Finally I observe some rain with my own eyes. I had almost consigned the local met office to the waste-bin as their forecast was a bit off. The weather is at least 12 hours late and so far it is really nothing special. Certainly not warranting the warnings about severe conditions issued by the met office. These days it seems, a bit of wind a bit of rain constitutes a grave danger to society, I think the met people are bored at large or trying to whip up a storm where there is none. Are we really so far removed from nature being nature and being natural that we need such needless, superfluous information?

Anyway, I went to the baths, had a nice swim in the pool and enjoyed some hours in the saunas and the steambath. Am now squeaky clean and pleasantly rested.

Folks,

Rain fell during the night and this morning. The temp at 8:00 AM is 74°F. and the humidity is a perfect 100%. There is a 5mph wind from the SW and the visibility is reported to be 5 m.

Jens:

Now that you are squeaky clean and rested you are ready for the ordeal of the long race to come. May the better team win with no injuries or fatalities this year. Take care you do not fall from your easy chair during an exciting moment in the broadcast and that you always have plenty of fuel nearby at all times in the form of snacks and cold beverages.

Indeed, we have lost much of our skill of sky watching. Once was the time a farmer just nailed a bit of string to a post and observed it through the day. IF it was dry it was a sunny day. If it was cold it was a cold day, if it was wet it was a rainy day, if it was moving it was a windy day, etc. wink

Once was the time country folk could look up at the clouds and predict the coming weather from them and other natural phenomena. They knew much more than we do now. Their lives depended upon it.

Chaps,

Thanks for your concerns and advice. I will bear those concerns in mind when reconnoitring aforesaid restaurant for emergency escape routes.

It must be well over 80f down on the beach here. Took me rather longer to complete a walk around the harbour due to some very scantily clad ladies sprawled about here an there.

Perhaps not surprisingly the more shapely the ladies and more revealing their costumes, how much more musclebound were their companions.

This must be some law of the beach I had not noticed before.
