I'm thinking of doing this deal because if I buy OEM MCE2005 for $135.00 CAD that is cheaper than buying Vista Home Premium when it is released and I get 2 OS's instead of just one. This is NCIX deal which is available to US and Canadian residents but I'm sure Newegg has the same deal. Anyone see any catch22's in this deal? http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=21369&manufacture=Others&promoid=1021

How can they stop me? If I have the product ID for both then I can use both.

How is it any sweat off their back if I use both? But you may be right and I will check into that right now.

OK, but there is nothing in their agreement about the Vista upgrade that states this so I doubt it is an issue. Using MCE2005 on one PC and Vista on the other is not the same as XP on two PC's. Only thing I'm really concerned about is that the upgrade is supposed to be part of a system purchase but NCIX says they clarified it with Microsoft and are saying it doesn't matter.

We'll see. I've put my feelers out so hopefully will get it clarified in a day or two.

I do when I use my Win98SE disk to verify my upgrade version of XP. It says it needs a previous version of Windows to upgrade from but it doesn't say I can't use it on another PC. I think you guys are correct though as someone on another forum said Microsoft disabled the product ID's when people upgraded from XP to XP64.

OK, but XP upgrade doesn't need any of the components from the previous OS. EULA? What's that? If Microsoft turns it off or not from the mothership is all I'm concerned about.

My guess is there is nothing stopping you from using both and that is what I plan to do.

This is incorrect info I got. Another person has told me that his XP 32bit wasn't disabled when he upgraded to XP 64bit. This is not a trade in program. It simply states that if you buy MCE2005 now you will get a free upgrade path to Vista Hoe Premium. I will be using MCE2005 on one PC and Vista on the other, all for the cost of $135.00 CAD. I'm with RookieCAF on this.

Where does it say that? It is indeed buy one now and get the other free later. Doesn't say anything about having to throw one in the trash when you upgrade to the other.

I asked on a Microsoft Usenet group and they are saying it will be the upgrade version which according to the EULA (as Rilex points out) the XP/MCE license you upgrade from will become part of the Vista license so you can only have one or the other installed. I've never read the XP upgrade EULA so wasn't aware of that and continued to use Win98SE if I so chose. I thought you just had to own a previous copy of Windows to use the upgrade version of XP and didn't know you can no longer use it once you upgrade to XP. Ignorance is bliss. I'm not breaking the EULA anyway as I have WinME on the other PC now and not the Win98SE I upgraded XP from. I can upgrade XP from four different OS's I own so it's not like I can't easily skirt the issue for any OS I choose to use. Want to use Win98SE? Then I just use one of my WinME/Win98/Win2K disks to upgrade XP from.

"Microsoft Media Center 2005 OEM Now With *FREE Vista Upgrade" http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/expressupgrade.mspx So it's an upgrade to the existing OS & as that on OEM is supposedly tied to the 1 PC you wouldn't be able to have 1 on 1 PC & the other on another.
