Bought a Seagate Barracuda 120 SATA 2 HD, Copied Windows over from Seagate 40 PATA HD with Disk Wizard 2K3.(I would like to use the 40 G HD in another computer.) Seemed to go ok The 120's files looked to be mirrored ok and worked as a 2nd drive. Unplugged 40 HD upon reboot greeted with OS error. Tried resetting CMOS to no avail. OK so I Quick format, Reload windows on SATA HD, Same deal OS error \:\( Ok Low level Format reload windows Yep you guessed it @!#$#$@#$ OS error. Checked and tried all MOBO settings, and both SATA controllers(Silcon Image and NV4's Onboard) I'm lost. Solutions anyone? what am I missing?

AFAIK you have to give XP (or Win2K) a diskette with SATA driver when you install it - you must press F6 when at start of setup (there is a prompt line telling you that).

You should have that topic covered in the manual of your motherboard. You should also have a floppy with the drivers, or a bootable CD and instructions how to make said floppy - again should come with your motherboard.

I have never had a disk utility copy XP from one drive to another and had it work. A clean install will probably work.

It works with a Ghost image for sure. PATA to PATA of course. I moved my system partition to a new disk once. You might have a problem with the missing bootloader (it's in the disk's bootsector record), but I'm using SystemCommander and not the NT loader.

If he has the SATA drive on an nForce4 native SATA controller he shouldn't need to but he will for the SiL controller.

I cannot say for sure. I don't have SATA disk. I do have a Gigabyte NF3 Ultra mobo (2 SATA controllers) and in the manual it says what I said. The CD coming with the board is bootable and can make boot diskettes. Choices include SIL (presumably Silicon Image controller, there is also a different option for SI RAID), and 2 options for nVidia SATA - one for XP and one for Win2K.

I don't have a different explanation for the errors he has on clean install, not unless he quotes the error message windoze gives \:\)

Update: Tried it with a quick format and made a disk from motherboard CD loaded ok, OS seemed to load ok. Guess what? OS Friggin error. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Windows ahhh Windows, It's not a bug it's a feature. THE ERROR MESSAGE is OS Error or Problems loading OS. That what is says. I've seen both. I've googled this problem seen similar ones but no answers. DOH! I'm pissed, Friggin Bleeding edge crap. I'm done with it. It's going back and I'm snagging an PATA disk.

you need to set the sata drive to compatible mode in the bios
(it replaces and emulates one of your ide channels) when you install windows or xp wont see it

once windows is installed you can set the sata to enhanced mode so it doesnt replace an ide channel and acts as a proper sata channel (not emulating an ide channel)

compatable mode:
windows see 2 ide channels + drives (although 1 channel is actually sata)

enhance mode:
windows will see 2 ide channels + 1 sata channel 6 drives

ps: it may not be called compatable mode in your bios

OK, Only problem is my Bios doesn't have that option. There is nothing in my bios that remotely resembles that option. The SATA defaults as a regular IDE controller only adjustment in bios is to enable raid. The Sillicon controller is seen as a SCSI device with its own onboard utilty bios. The options are 3 types of raid or JBOD. I'm lost with no solutions.

It does and also works fine as a secondary drive it just won't be the Primary Boot HD.

er why cant it be you primary boot hdd aka c: drive ?????

heres an idea might fix your prob sort of:

make sata drive c: boot from xp cd, install xp to sata drive,
then boot from a floppy or whatever (try barts pe boot disk - use google if you dont have anything) dont boot from sata or your pata disk and copy over from pata to sata, windows folder, program files folder and documents + settings folder
bit of a hack but may acheive what you want ;\)
