You use the direction of the shadows. The shadow cast by the sun on your wing makes a great compass. You also need to have a good map (e.g. RAF_Louvert maps) and follow landmarks. It is quite easy with practice and really adds to the experience. Flying to the target area is no longer a boring drone as you are busy navigating the entire time.

You really can get along without any of the guages. e.g. No altimeter? Look at the ground and see how high you are. No airspeed indicator? Listen to the wind whistle and look at the ground to tell how fast you are moving. And so on. It is actually fun to have to use skill and ingenuity to fly, just as the real pilot would have had to do in the early war.
