AMD Sampling 7nm Zen 2 CPU This Year, Intel Delays 10nm Again
AMD Ramping up 7nm CPUs and GPUs for 2019
CEO Dr. Lisa Su revealed that the company is going to sample a 7nm server CPU later this year.
Big blue [Intel] revealed in its earnings call yesterday that it has delayed its 10nm process yet again [originally promised for 2015] and now expects to begin rolling out 10nm based products some time next year [2019]. .
Intel’s 10nm is [speculated to be] comparable in terms of specifications to 7nm nodes from TSMC, Samsung & Gloablfoundries. But, [the above news] still means that we’re going to see Intel lose its process edge to the remainder of the industry for the very first time in decades.
..this is going to create a new paradigm where the chip giant will have to rely primarily on design ingenuity and not its process lead to compete..
Which is perhaps why we’ve seen Intel go into a frenzy of talent poaching as of late..
With a re-invigorated Intel, a resurgent AMD, and a steadfast NVIDIA, we’re witnessing the beginning of a new chapter in the pages of PC history
One thing I've predicted for years is that all the chip manufacturers would become equal at around 3nm to 7nm node size -- because that's close to the limit of "silicon". At that point, progress will be based on design ingenuity. We're fast approaching that point.
I also predicted that if AMD could "survive" until the 3nm to 7nm region, the stress on AMD would greatly abate -- because AMD would be virtually guaranteed to be "competitive" and competitors (primarily Intel, Nvidia) could not suddenly jump way ahead. This seems to be happening.
