The Ryzen "follow on" is already scheduled for launch in 2018.

AMD always planned for Zen, Zen 2, Zen 3 CPU. And always planed for Polaris, Vega, Navi GPU. Ideally, only about a year apart. This is in line with AMD's plan to catch and, maybe, slightly improve on Intel CPUs and Nvidia GPUs.They started down this path approximately 4 years ago -- now, it seems to have paid off (if only there were more motherboards this week).

AMD Zen 2 Based CPU Family is Called Pinnacle Ridge – Successor To Summit Ridge Arrives on AM4 in Early 2018

..AMD launched their Ryzen CPUs just a week ago and reports of their next CPU architecture are already coming in. According to AMD’s own multi-generational roadmap, the company indicated that Zen would be followed up by Zen 2 and Zen 3..

..AMD already gained a staggering 52% leap in IPC (Instruction Per Cycle) with their Zen architecture so we can expect further gains (5% – 15%) with the Zen follow-ups..

..Furthermore, the new Pinnacle Ridge family will remain compatible with the AM4 socket as AMD has already stated that they plan to stick with AM4 for a long time. It’s possible that even Zen 3 processors will be compatible with a updated revision of the socket while allowing backwards compatibility with older (by then) Zen 2 and Zen based desktops chips...

An AMD "bang-for-buck" selling point is that any new AM4 CPU will fit into the old AM4 motherboard. Just buy any new AMD CPU or APU and plug it in to the same motheboard. They did this with AM3 socket CPUs. Intel makes more frequent motherboard IC changes -- adding expense to some (not all) Intel CPU upgrades, in the past.
